Following a law dated 1291, most of Venice’s glassmaking was confined to the Island of Murano, as were its glassmakers who were forbidden from leaving under threat of death as their knowledge and skill were so precious. Despite this, they were respected highly and got to do what they loved whilst trapped on their beautiful island.
